Promoting Health and Safety in Study Abroad

You might think that once you have found a study abroad program, have applied and got accept, that all you have to do is get on an airplane and go. Unfortunately it is not that simple.

  • This may seem to be a no-brainer, but make sure you have met all of the deadlines of your program and YOUR SCHOOL. You do not want to return and find out that none of your credits will transfer.
  • Think about financial aid. Your school may allow you to apply any financial aid you receive to a study abroad program. There may also be other sources of aid and scholarships that you might want to consider. Do not let the cost of a program discourage you from studying abroad.
  • Make sure you get your passport and visas (if necessary). It takes about six weeks to get a passport and possibly longer to get a visa so make sure to apply early.
  • Make travel arrangements before you go. Travel agencies can provide advice on special student flights and discounts, student tours, accommodations, and rail passes. Rail passes — many of which must be purchased in the United States before departure — may offer substantial savings to those who will be traveling by rail while abroad. Click here to learn more.
  • Sign up for an International Student ID Card to get discounts, medical benefits and more. Click here to learn more.
  • Buy a phone card so that you can easily keep in touch with people back home.

  • Many students (and especially their parents) are concerned about safety. Most countries are no more or less safe than your own hometown. You should check out travel advisories before you go. You might also consider talking to people who have recently traveled to the region you are going to.
  • Find out from your program about guidelines for what you need to bring along. Keep in mind that you might not be able to find everything in your country that would be readily available at home.
  • Finally, make sure you have fun. You will return a more well rounded person with many wonderful memories.
